What Is a Tricast Bet? The Three-Runner Challenge

WHAT IS A TRICAST BET?

A tricast bet asks you to predict which three runners will finish first, second, and third in a race. It is available in horse betting and greyhound betting and is widely offered for fans of Irish sports betting. Because you are predicting three finishing positions rather than one, a tricast is harder to win than a standard win bet, but the potential return is higher to reflect that difficulty.

Types of Tricast Bet
Tricast Type What You Are Predicting Number of Bets How Returns Are Calculated
Straight Tricast Name exact 1st, 2nd, and 3rd 1 CSF formula using all runners' Starting Price
Combination Tricast Three named runners fill top three in any order 6 CSF formula x6 permutations

There are two types of tricast: the straight tricast and the combination tricast. The difference between them comes down to whether you need to predict the exact finishing order or simply which three runners fill the top three places.

HOW DOES A STRAIGHT TRICAST WORK?

A straight tricast requires you to name the winner, the runner-up, and the third-placed horse in the correct order. All three selections must finish in precisely the positions you have specified.

For example, in a race at Leopardstown, if you place a straight tricast with Horse A to finish first, Horse B second, and Horse C third, that exact sequence must occur. If Horse B wins and Horse A finishes second, the bet loses. A straight tricast is one bet at your chosen unit stake.

WHAT IS A COMBINATION TRICAST?

A combination tricast covers all possible finishing orders of your three named selections. With three runners, there are six ways they can finish first, second, and third. A combination tricast places a straight tricast on each of those six permutations, so the total stake is six times your unit stake.

How Combination Tricasts Work
Bet 1st 2nd 3RD
1 Horse A Horse B Horse C
2 Horse A Horse C Horse B
3 Horse B Horse A Horse C
4 Horse B Horse C Horse A
5 Horse C Horse A Horse B
6 Horse C Horse B Horse A

A return is paid whichever order your three selections finish in, provided all three land in the top three. At €1 per line, a combination tricast costs €6 in total. If any one of your three selections finishes outside the top three, all six bets lose.

HOW ARE TRICAST RETURNS CALCULATED?

Tricast returns are not fixed when you place the bet. They are calculated after the race using the Computer Straight Forecast (CSF) formula, which takes into account the starting prices of all runners in the race, not just your three selections. This means the exact return is only known once the race has been run and starting prices are confirmed.

Because the CSF formula reflects the difficulty of the outcome relative to the full field, larger and more competitive fields tend to produce higher payouts than smaller fields, all else being equal. All figures shown in any tricast calculator are illustrative, and actual returns will vary.

WHAT SHOULD I CHECK BEFORE PLACING A TRICAST?

Tricasts are generally not available in races with fewer than five runners, so it is worth checking the rules for the specific race before placing a bet. If one of your selections does not run, most bookmakers will settle the remaining two as a forecast, though terms vary, and it is worth confirming this with your bookmaker beforehand.

It is also worth being clear on the total cost of the bet before placing. A combination tricast at €2 per line costs €12 in total. As with all betting, returns are not guaranteed, and it is possible to lose your entire stake.

TRICAST VS FORECAST: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

A forecast asks you to predict the first two finishers in a race. A tricast asks you to predict the first three. The tricast is harder to win and typically returns a higher payout when it does land. Both bet types are settled using the CSF formula, and neither offers a fixed return at the time of placing.
