Lucky 15 Betting: Four Selections, Fifteen Bets

WHAT IS A LUCKY 15 BET?

A Lucky 15 consists of four selections combined into 15 bets: 4 singles, 6 doubles, 4 trebles, and 1 fourfold accumulator. It is essentially a Yankee bet with four singles added. Because it includes singles, a return is possible from just one winning selection, whereas the Yankee requires at least two winners before any return is paid.

Lucky 15 bets are available across a wide range of sports in sports betting in Ireland, but they are most commonly placed in horse betting, where four competitive selections across a day's cards is a straightforward way to structure the bet.

HOW IS A LUCKY 15 MADE UP?

How Is A Lucky 15 Made Up?
Bet Type Number of Bets Running Total
Singles 4 4
Doubles 6 10
Trebles 4 14
Fourfold 1 14

Every possible combination of your four selections at each level is covered. The four singles mean each selection is backed to win on its own. The six doubles cover every possible pairing. The four trebles cover every group of three. The fourfold requires all four to win.

HOW MUCH DOES A LUCKY 15 COST?

The total cost of a Lucky 15 is your unit stake multiplied by 15. Here is how the total outlay looks at common unit stakes:

How Much Does a Lucky 15 Cost?
Unit Stake Number of Bets Total Outlay
€0.50 15 €7.50
€1.00 15 €15.00
€2.00 15 €30.00
€5.00 15 €75.00

The stake per line applies to each of the 15 bets individually. A €1 Lucky 15 is 15 bets at €1 each, for a total outlay of €15. It is worth being clear on the total cost before placing, particularly at higher unit stakes.

LUCKY 15 EXAMPLE: IRISH HORSE RACING*

To illustrate how a Lucky 15 pays out across different scenarios, consider four selections on any race day on the horse racing calendar, with a €1 stake per line (€15 total):

Horse A at 3/1 | Horse B at 5/2 | Horse C at 4/1 | Horse D at 6/1

Lucky 15 Example
Scenario Winning Bets How Returns Build Approx. Return (€1 Per LIne)
1 winner (D only) 1 single D at 6/1 ~€7.00
2 winners (A + C) 2 singles + 1 double Singles: €9.00, Double A+C (19/1): €20.00 ~€29.00
3 winners (A, B, C) 3 singles + 3 doubles + 1 treble Singles: €12.50, Doubles: €51.50, Treble A+B+C (69/1): €70.00 ~€134.00
All 4 winners All 15 bets Singles: €19.50, Doubles: €139.00, Trebles: €430.50, Fourfold (489/1): €490.00 ~€1,079.00

*All figures are illustrative and based on the specific odds shown. Actual returns will vary depending on the odds at the time of placing. Returns are not guaranteed.

The key point the table illustrates is that a Lucky 15 generates a return from just one winner. With Horse D winning at 6/1, the single on that selection alone returns €7 on a €1 stake. With a Yankee, that same scenario would return nothing.

LUCKY 15 VS YANKEE: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

The Yankee bet uses the same four selections but consists of 11 bets rather than 15. The four singles in a Lucky 15 are the only difference, but they have a significant practical effect: the Lucky 15 pays out from one winner, while the Yankee requires at least two.

The trade-off is cost. A Lucky 15 at €1 per line costs €15. A Yankee at the same stake costs €11. The additional €4 buys you the extra space of the four singles. Whether that trade-off is worthwhile depends on your own assessment of the selections and how confident you are in each one individually.

HOW DOES A LUCKY 15 COMPARE TO OTHER MULTIPLE BETS?

The Lucky 15 sits within a family of structured multiple bets. For three selections, the equivalent is a Patent bet, which covers 7 bets, including singles. For seven selections, the Super Heinz covers 120 bets. Each of these structured bets follows the same principle: every possible combination at each level is included, with singles providing a return from a single winner.

The Lucky 15 is generally considered the most practical entry point into this family of bets, as four selections is a manageable number across a typical race day, and the total stake at lower unit stakes remains reasonable.

WHAT SHOULD I KNOW BEFORE PLACING A LUCKY 15?

The total cost of a Lucky 15 is higher than a Yankee or a simple fourfold accumulator. At €1 per line, the outlay is €15, and a return from one winner at a short price may not cover the full stake. It is worth being clear about the total cost and the range of possible returns before placing a bet.

As with all multiple bets, returns from a Lucky 15 are not guaranteed. It is possible to lose your entire stake. Only bet what you can afford to lose.
